Mass timber is emerging as a preferred construction material due to its sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and versatility. Unlike traditional concrete and steel, mass timber is made from engineered wood products like cross-laminated timber (CLT) and Dowel-Laminated Timber (DLT), which offer several advantages:
DLT is a type of mass timber product that uses wooden dowels to bond layers of lumber together without using glue or nails. The advantages of DLT include:
Intronic's new DLT Manufacturing Line
Designed in collaboration with International Timberframes, Intronic build the first, fully automated DLT manufacturing line made in North American.
The first machine is installed in Donald, BC, Canada at the new location of International Timberframes and is running production since April, 2024.
DLT billets are produced with a uniform width of 24 inches and can be manufactured up to a maximum length of 24 feet.
The depth ranges between 4 to 12 inches. These billets come in various patterns, including standard, fluted, and double fluted designs,
with options for custom patterns to meet specific project needs.
In post-processing, multiple billets can be joined together to create wider panels, offering flexibility in design and application.
The machine is optimized for a production output of 1,000 square feet per 8-hour shift. The dowel insertion process is particularly efficient, outpacing the drilling process. High-performing drill bits will increase the output.
Quality is maintained through precise monitoring of each dowel insertion, using torque measurement to ensure consistent standards. The system enforces minimum and maximum torque limits to guarantee high product quality. All measurements are recorded in a centralized database for ongoing quality control and traceability.
DLT billets are designed using CAD software, and the design files are uploaded to the machine's data server for production. The machine utilizes these files to guide fabrication, including drilling holes and inserting dowels. The entire process, from drilling to dowel insertion, is fully automated, with dried dowels being pressed into the pre-drilled holes with precision.
