Why Mass Timber?

Mass timber is emerging as a preferred construction material due to its sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and versatility. Unlike traditional concrete and steel, mass timber is made from engineered wood products like cross-laminated timber (CLT) and Dowel-Laminated Timber (DLT), which offer several advantages:

  • Sustainability: Mass timber construction has a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to concrete and steel. Trees sequester carbon as they grow, and using wood in construction stores that carbon for the life of the building. This makes mass timber an excellent choice for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable development.

  • Cost and Speed of Construction: Mass timber components are prefabricated, allowing for quicker assembly on-site, which reduces construction time and labor costs. This results in fewer delays, lower overall costs, and reduced site impact, especially in urban environments.

  • Strength and Versatility: Mass timber products, including DLT, provide excellent strength-to-weight ratios, making them suitable for a range of applications, from residential buildings to large-scale commercial projects. They offer flexibility in design and can meet high-performance requirements for seismic, fire, and acoustic performance.

Why Dowel-Laminated Timber (DLT)?

DLT is a type of mass timber product that uses wooden dowels to bond layers of lumber together without using glue or nails. The advantages of DLT include:

  • Non-Toxic and All-Wood Product: DLT is an all-wood product, which is attractive for builders looking for non-toxic, natural building materials. The absence of glue or nails makes DLT a healthier and more sustainable option.

  • Superior Acoustic and Thermal Performance: : The all-wood composition of DLT allows for excellent acoustic properties, making it ideal for multi-story residential buildings, schools, and offices. Additionally, DLT provides good thermal mass, contributing to energy efficiency.

  • Aesthetics and Design Flexibility: DLT panels provide a clean and aesthetically pleasing natural wood finish. They are highly customizable, allowing for a range of architectural expressions and integration into various building types.

Why is Now a Good Time to Enter the DLT Manufacturing Industy in North America?

  • Growing Demand for Sustainable Building Materials: There is a rising demand for green building solutions in North America, driven by stricter environmental regulations, incentives for sustainable construction, and increased awareness of climate change. This trend presents a significant market opportunity for mass timber and DLT manufacturers.

  • Advancements in Building Codes: Building codes in North America have been evolving to accommodate mass timber structures, allowing taller and larger buildings made from wood. These regulatory changes are opening new markets for mass timber products like DLT, which are gaining acceptance as safe, sustainable, and high-performing building materials.

  • Market Opportunity and Investment Incentives: As demand grows, there is an opportunity to establish a strong presence in the relatively underdeveloped DLT market. Governments and investors are increasingly supporting mass timber projects and facilities through grants, subsidies, and low-interest loans to promote sustainable construction, making it a strategic time to enter the market.

Intronic's new DLT Manufacturing Line

Designed in collaboration with International Timberframes, Intronic build the first, fully automated DLT manufacturing line made in North American.

The first machine is installed in Donald, BC, Canada at the new location of International Timberframes and is running production since April, 2024.

The Product – DLT Billets

DLT billets are produced with a uniform width of 24 inches and can be manufactured up to a maximum length of 24 feet. The depth ranges between 4 to 12 inches. These billets come in various patterns, including standard, fluted, and double fluted designs, with options for custom patterns to meet specific project needs. In post-processing, multiple billets can be joined together to create wider panels, offering flexibility in design and application.

Software Application

Productivity

The machine is optimized for a production output of 1,000 square feet per 8-hour shift. The dowel insertion process is particularly efficient, outpacing the drilling process. High-performing drill bits will increase the output.

Quality Assurance

Quality is maintained through precise monitoring of each dowel insertion, using torque measurement to ensure consistent standards. The system enforces minimum and maximum torque limits to guarantee high product quality. All measurements are recorded in a centralized database for ongoing quality control and traceability.

Software Application

The Manufacturing Process

DLT billets are designed using CAD software, and the design files are uploaded to the machine's data server for production. The machine utilizes these files to guide fabrication, including drilling holes and inserting dowels. The entire process, from drilling to dowel insertion, is fully automated, with dried dowels being pressed into the pre-drilled holes with precision.
